Marken Michel among six tryout players that visited the Eagles

Doug Pederson said the Philadelphia Eagles wouldn’t be making any immediate changes to his staff after the team’s loss the Miami Dolphins but the head coach didn’t entirely rule out personnel changes.

In potentially related news, the Eagles tried out six free agents on Monday. The list of names, per Howard Balzer: wide receivers Marken Michel and Darius Jennings, linebackers Emmanuel Beal and Quintin Wirginis, defensive tackle Willie Henry, and cornerback Trevor Williams. Let’s take a closer look at each player.

MARKEN MICHEL

The Eagles originally signed Michel to a future contract after the 2018 season. He had some nice moments during offseason practices and even burned Tennessee Titans starting cornerback Adoree’ Jackson for a 75-yard touchdown in the preseason.

The Eagles waived Michel in final roster cuts and he’s remained available since.

Philly desperately needs to add some explosive speed to their offense. Re-signing Michel could be worth a shot.

DARIUS JENNINGS

The 27-year-old Jennings entered the NFL by signing with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted rookie free agent back in 2015. He bounced around the league on practice squads before making the Titans’ roster in 2018. Jennings remained with the Titans until getting waived on Halloween earlier this season.

Jennings hasn’t accomplished much as a receiver with just 27 career receptions for 235 yards (8.7 average) and zero touchdowns. But he has shown some juice as a kick returner. Jennings has 22 returns in 2018 for one touchdown and a strong 31.7 average. Miles Sanders is only averaging 22.4 yards per return this year while Boston Scott is averaging 21.

EMMANUEL BEAL

Beal played college football at Oklahoma before signing with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft. Beal spent his rookie season on injured reserve before being waived by Seattle back in April. He profiles as one of those linebacker/safety hybrids that Jim Schwartz likes.

QUINTIN WIRGINIS

Interesting name. Three “in”s, one “ir,” and one “is.” The man with five I’s. Wirginis is a 23-year-old who played college football at Pitt. He suffered a non-contact knee injury as a senior and went unselected in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Eagles probably wanted to check up on his health.

WILLIE HENRY

The Eagles previously worked out Henry earlier this season. The 25-year-old was a fourth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2016 NFL Draft. He logged 35 total tackles and 4.5 sacks in two seasons with the Ravens before being waived in final cuts earlier this year.

The Eagles only have three defensive tackles on their 53-man roster after waiving Albert Huggins over the weekend. Signing Henry would give the team more depth behind Fletcher Cox, Timmy Jernigan, and Anthony Rush.

TREVOR WILLIAMS

Williams, 26, originally signed with the San Diego Chargers after going undrafted out of Penn State in 2016. He did well for himself by earning a significant role; Williams logged 27 starts in 37 games played before suffering a knee injury that cut his 2018 season short. The Bolts then put Williams on injured reserve in early September before waiving him off IR in October. The Arizona Cardinals claimed Williams and he played two games with them before getting waived again.

The Eagles already have seven cornerbacks on their roster but it can’t hurt to check up on the health of a guy who has starting experience. Note that Ronald Darby and Jalen Mills will be free agents this offseason.

WHO WILL THE EAGLES SIGN?

Michel makes the most sense right now but it’s entirely possible the Eagles won’t immediately sign anyone from this group. The Eagles might be doing some early homework on players that they’ll sign to future contracts once the season is over.
