Eagles Rookie Report Card: Young players shine despite loss

Silver lining?

The Eagles lost for the third week in a row, so it feels like nothing else matters. Despite the overwhelming disappointment, there is solace to take in some encouraging play from the team’s rookies.

Andre Dillard: N/A

It’s head scratching at this point why the Eagles first round pick isn’t starting at left tackle. Despite impressing only weeks ago, Dillard remains Jason Peters’ reliever. Peters’ descent into mediocrity only underscores the Eagles’ poor decision to keep Dillard sidelined. Peters had a false start that ruined a potential 4th-and-2 conversion and instead forced the Eagles into a field goal.

Miles Sanders: B+

Miles Sanders got his shot at being the featured back and he delivered a truly solid performance (17 carries for 83 yards; 5 receptions for 22 yards and one touchdown). While you’d want to see even more flash from the rookie, Sanders ran hard and contributed in the passing game. With Jordan Howard still on the mend, I am excited to see Sanders grow as the primary ball carrier on offense.

JJ Arcega-Whiteside: B

For the third straight week, JJ Arcega-Whiteside contributed a chunk play in the passing game. The rookie pass catcher found an opening in the Dolphins defense while Carson Wentz scrambled outside the pocket.

Even with Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor healthy, Arcega-Whiteside should get more snaps. He’s shown enough recently to warrant more playing time.

Anthony Rush: B

The undrafted rookie looks like a diamond in the rough for the Eagles. The behemoth defender looked really solid once again in rotational duty, even batting down a pass at the line of scrimmage. He may just be a run defender, but looks like a damn good one at that.

TJ Edwards: B

TJ Edwards deserves some credit for strong special teams play, including recovering an onside kick attempt.
