Look on the bright side... is an expression. Whether you choose to add that expression regarding the Philadelphia Eagles’ playoff chances largely depends on how confident you are in them going on a run. So far, they’ve given us very little reason to believe that’s possible.
It’s going to take a massive rally to move past this 37-31 loss to the Miami Dolphins. In a game where the Eagles owned up to a 94% win probability, the defense fell apart and the offense failed to regain their footing in time to save the sinking ship. They have zero momentum going for them with a four game run likely required. They’ve been down like this before and beat the odds but they haven’t hit rock bottom like this in a good while.
Each week we ask, is this the week they get it going? Is this the week the offense and defense both play competent, complimentary football? What about this week? No? Perhaps next week. Four straight wins seems like insurmountable odds considering the lack of consistency the Eagles have produced over the past two years.
Heads should roll after such an embarrassing and improbable loss, but chances are the coaching staff stays intact until the end of the season. That’s even after Jim Schwartz let Ryan Fitzpatrick in the 28th ranked DVOA pass offense dissect his defense for 365 yards and 3 touchdowns, the second time he’s ripped them to shreds in two years.
