The Philadelphia Eagles waived Jordan Matthews on Monday afternoon, according to an official announcement from the team.
This development comes one day after Matthews LED ALL EAGLES SKILL PLAYERS IN OFFENSIVE SNAPS during the team’s Week 12 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
The Eagles originally brought Matthews back for a third stint in Philly during the bye week. Some thought he could be a solid addition to a wide receivers corps that was mightily struggling. But the non-threatening Matthews only caught four of his 12 total targets for 33 yards in his only two games played.
Matthews is just the latest veteran player to be cut after playing significant snaps for the Eagles this season. Other examples include: Zach Brown, Orlando Scandrick, Akeem Spence, and Andrew Sendejo. Sure doesn’t seem like the coaching staff and front office are on the front page!
The Eagles waiving Matthews seems to bode well for Alshon Jeffery and/or Nelson Agholor. Both starting wide receivers missed Sunday’s tilt but they could be back for this week’s game against the Miami Dolphins. It remains to be seen just how much that’ll help considering their lack of effectiveness this season, but I guess they’re better than JMatt.
Matthews’ roster spot might be filled by cornerback Cre’Von LeBlanc, who has been eligible to be activated from injured reserve since Week 9.
