Eagles’ defense needs to slow down Patriots’ “turbo” attack

The New England Patriots’ offense hasn’t been a world-beater this year, but they still present a unique challenge for the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense. I’m talking about the Patriots’ “turbo” offense. Shutting down this high-tempo style of offense will be key if the Eagles’ defense is going to keep things close.

When going no-huddle, the Patriots have been extremely successful. They’ve had a blistering 60% success rate and have shown it’s a valuable tool in forcing defenses into vanilla looks while slowing down the pass rush and wearing teams out over the course of the game.

Three plays from the Patriots “turbo” offense that I highlighted on The Kist & Solak Show #145 are shown in the video below. You can read a more detailed breakdown from Mark Schofield in his piece for Pats Pulpit.

These three back-to-back-to-back plays form the iron backbone of how the Patriots will likely attack the Eagles when they go without a huddle. You’ve got a quick game audible against cover 0, a play-action cover 3 beater, and a run play that manipulates and attacks a safety in the box. The Patriots went turbo for this entire third quarter touchdown drive that went for 11 plays and 75 yards.

To slow down the Patriots, the Eagles will literally have to slow them down. Keeping them out of turbo requires the creation of negative plays, whether that back tackles for loss, sacks, or incompletions. Easier said than done, especially for a defense that has been spurting blood from their neck against quality quarterbacks.

We break the match-up between the Patriots’ offense and Eagles’ defense in more depth on The Kist & Solak Show #145! Listen on the media player below or click here (or here for Spotify) if the player doesn’t load. New to podcasts?! Check out our guide on how to listen to BGN! FLY EAGLES FLY!
