One of the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad members has been stolen. (GASP!)
The Atlanta Falcons signed cornerback D.J. White to their active roster, according to an official announcement from the team.
White only signed to the Eagles’ practice squad last week. Here’s what we wrote about him at the time:
White, 26, was originally selected by the Kansas City Chief with a sixth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He played in 11 games with KC as a rookie and logged 11 tackles, three passes, and one interception. The Chiefs waived him in November 17. White was claimed by the Colts and played in two games with Indianapolis before ultimately getting cut in September 2018. He remained on the market until spending a month with Washington back in August 2019.
By signing with the Falcons, White gets at least three weeks of guaranteed salary. His roster spot is also locked in for 21 days. Not to mention he’ll actually get a chance to play now. Hard to blame him for leaving.
The Eagles originally signed White since they were desperate for cornerback bodies. The team should be in slightly better shape in that regard since Sidney Jones is expected to return this week. Jones, Rasul Douglas, Craig James, Orlando Scandrick, and Ryan Lewis should be the team’s five corners for Sunday’s game against the Vikings.
Ronald Darby and Avonte Maddox are still recovering from injuries. The Eagles can’t activate Jalen Mills from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list until Week 7 (at the earliest) and Cre’Von LeBlanc from injured reserve until Week 9 (at the earliest).
It remains to be seen how the Eagles will fill their new practice squad vacancy. They could look to bring Ajene Harris back. Harris, an undrafted rooke free agent cornerback, was cut in favor of the more experienced White last week.
One reason the Falcons had an open roster spot to sign White is because former Eagles safety Johnathan Cyprien suffered a foot injury that has landed him on injured reserve. The Eagles only sent Cyppy Cuy — in addition to a 2020 seventh-round pick — down to Atlanta last week in exchange for linebacker/special teams contributor Duke Riley and the Falcons’ 2020 sixth-round pick. Here’s hoping Cyp gets better but the trade is already looking like a win for the Eagles.
