While it needs to happen less frequently, the Philadelphia Eagles sure do have a way of responding when the chips are down. By stomping the Buffalo Bills in their own house, the Eagles move to 4-4 with their playoff hopes still intact. That’s huge for a team that has seen more instances of turmoil than wins in recent history.
Challenged by awful weather and a stingy Bills’ defense, Doug Pederson and company schemed up one of their best games of the year. Their screen game and run concepts were particularly impressive and by the end it was just and endless barrage of body blows culminating in a backbreaking 14-play, 83-yard touchdown drive to put the nail in the coffin.
The turning point came when Brandon Graham forced and recovered a fumble from Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen, setting the Eagles up at the Buffalo 24-yard line. From that point on, the Eagles would outscore the Bills 28-6.

The defense did their part by holding the Bills to 13 points, but still had their moments of allowing inexplicable conversions in extremely advantageous situations. For example, the two Bills’ touchdowns came on 3rd and Goal from the 14-yard line and later 3rd and 13 from their 28-yard line. Ultimately, there were enough flashes of complementary football where both the offense and defense played well simultaneously.
Overall, it’s a solid win against a decent team whose record was propped up by top five easiest schedule since 1986, according to Football Outsiders. The real tests come directly after the bye, but that’s looking too far ahead. The shaky but competitive Chicago Bears come to Philadelphia next in a rematch of last years Wild Card round. Get past them and the Eagles will head into the bye above .500 with all of the controversy of recent weeks well in the rear-view mirror.
