Eagles starting quarterback Carson Wentz is “expected to be healthy enough to be a full participant in Philadelphia’s offseason program in April if the team wants him to,” according to NFL insider Adam Schefter.
Wentz has been recovering from a fractured vertebrae in his back that caused him to miss the Eagles’ final five games of their 2018 season. Schefter notes there’s a belief Wentz’s back injury is tied to the aftermath of the ACL/LCL injuries he suffered in 2017 but “there is no proof” that’s the case.
Wentz potentially participating in offseason workouts is not unexpected. During a mid-December press conference, Doug Pederson estimated that Wentz’s recovery would take about “three months.” That timeline would indicate he should be healthy before the Eagles’ voluntary workout program begins in April.
The Eagles will certainly be glad to have Wentz healthy for offseason workouts this year after he had to miss them in 2018 while he recovered from knee surgery. A full, healthy offseason of preparing for the 2019 regular season could do Wentz good as he tries to recapture his 2017 near-MVP form.
