Eagles sign two speedy wide receivers to reserve/future contracts

Worth a shot.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed free agent wide receivers Marken Michel and Johnny Holton to reserve/future contracts, according to an official announcement from the team.

The Michel signing was first reported two weeks ago. Here’s what we wrote at the time:

Michel has logged 72 receptions for 1,215 yards (16.9 average) and eight touchdowns over two CFL seasons with the Calgary Stampders. He’s also rushed the ball four times for 47 yards and one score. And he even has kick and punt return experience. Michel is the brother of New England Patriots rookie running back, Sony. Michel’s big play ability makes him worth a look on the 90-man offseason roster. The Eagles could certainly use some more speed on offense.

Holton, 27, measures in at 6-1, 190 pounds. He originally signed with the Raiders as a rookie free agent following the 2016 NFL Draft. In 32 games played over three seasons, Holton has been targeted 22 times for 11 receptions, 252 yards (22.9 average), and three touchdowns. He also had six carries for 43 yards as a rookie. Holton has college experience as a kick returner.

Michel and Holton clearly fit the mold of vertical threats. As previously noted, the Eagles could really afford to add more speed to their roster. These guys are obviously long shots to make the team but maybe they’ll end up pleasantly surprising the Eagles.

In addition to these two players, the Eagles previously announced 14 future contract signings:

  • WR Carlton Agudosi
  • OT Tyreek Burwell
  • DB Mercy Maston
  • LB Alex Singleton
  • LB Asantay Brown
  • C Anthony Fabiano
  • OG Kaleb Johnson
  • DB Jeremiah McKinnon
  • WR Braxton Miller
  • WR Dorren Miller
  • DE Joe Ostman
  • RB Donnel Pumphrey
  • CB Chandon Sullivan
  • TE Will Tye
