The last 25 #25 picks

i.0.jpeg

With our departure from the playoffs, we all know it's now mock draft season! To go along with this I decided to do some research into our position in the draft (bar any Howie trades) to see how successful the #25 pick has been in history, and what we could hope of with our pick in this upcoming draft. Let's get to it! (P.S. the info before 2001 is kinda sketchy so feel free to correct me on anything I got wrong)

1994 - Greg Hill, RB, to KC

Rushed for just over 3000 yards in his career, averaging 4.2ypc. Finished his career in Detroit in 1999.

1995 - Billy Milner, T, to Miami

Played 30 games in 4 years before leaving the league (0 games in his final season).

1996 - Jermane Mayberry, G, to Philly

Played 123 games in his career, spending 9 years as an Eagle.

1997 - Jon Harris, DE, to Philly

Recorded 2 sacks over 2 seasons in Philly, spent 1999 split between Cleveland and GB and left the league after that.

1998 - Donovin Darius, DB, to Jags

Spent 8 years in Jacksonville, compiling 291 tackles and 14 INT's over his time there before ending his career in Miami.

1999 - Antuan Edwards, DB, to GB

Spent 5 years in GB before bouncing around the league for 3 more years, ending his career in Atlanta in 2005.

2000 - Chris Hovan, DT, to Minnesota

5 years in Minnesota, 5 years in Tampa Bay totaling 265 tackles and 22 sacks over his career.

2001 - Freddie Mitchell, WR, to Philly

4th & 26, and an extra 1,235 yards during his 4-year career.

2002 - Charles Grant, DE, to NO

8 years in New Orleans, with 47 sacks, 16 FF's and an INT to his name, joined Chicago in 2010 but never played a game.

2003 - William Joseph, DT, to NYG

5 years with the Giants, averaging just under 2 sacks a season. Joined Oakland in 2008 but was unproductive in his 2 years there (0 sacks).

2004 - Ahmad Carroll, DB, to GB

Again not a great career, spent 3 years in GB averaging an INT a season before going to Jacksonville and later the Jets to end his career.

2005 - Jason Campbell, QB, to Washington

Not much to say about Campbell, 87/60 TD to INT ratio, never threw more than 20 TD's in a season, finished with just under 17,000 career yards and an 81.7 QBR.

2006 - Santonio Holmes, WR, to Pittsburgh

389 receptions for just over 6,000 yards in his career between Pittsburgh, NYJ and a sprinkling of games for Chicago. Caught as many TD's as a rookie as he did in his final 3 years in the league.

2007 - Jon Beason, LB, to Carolina

Spent 7 years at the Panthers, with some highly productive years included here. Lost out to Luke Kuechly following a spell on IR. Had a productive year with the Giants before injuries derailed his career and led to retirement in 2016.

2008 - Mike Jenkins, DB, to Dallas

A pro-bowl alternate in his 2nd season in the league with Dallas with nothing else really of note in his time with the Cowboys. Had a decent season with Oakland in 2013 but his time in Tampa and later Arizona was mediocre at best and riddled with injuries. (Torn ACL in the 2016 pre-season with Arizona).

2009 - Vontae Davis, DB, to Miami

Retired at halftime during a Bills game, need I say more? A solid player, 343 tackles, 22 INT's and a TD to his name over his 8 year and half a game career.

2010 - Tim Tebow, QB, to Denver

Yeah Tim Tebow, interesting career and played until 2015 where he made 4 pre-season appearances for the Eagles going 21/36 for 286 yds, 2 TDs and an INT, whilst rushing for 82 yards and a TD too.

2011 - James Carpenter, T, to Seattle

As far as I'm aware Carpenter is the first of these picks to still be active. Made 2 SuperBowls with Seattle, winning one in 2014. Currently plays for the Jets heading into the final year of his contract, placed on IR in November with a shoulder injury after shifting to LG.

2012 - Dont'a Hightower, LB, to NE

Solid linebacker for the Pats, currently signed to a 4yr/$35.5mil contract and been a starter since he beat our Rob Nincovich in his rookie season.

2013 - Xavier Rhodes, DB, to Minnesota

Starting CB for the Vikings, signed to a 5 year extension in 2017 for just over $70 million and ranked 55th on the NFL Top 100 for 2018, none of which helped when they played the Eagles in the NFCCG.

2014 - Jason Verrett, DB, to San Diego

A starting corner who has struggled with injuries, spent the last 3 years on Injured Reserve with knee and achilles problems.

2015 - Shaq Thompson, LB, to Carolina

Spent some time with the Boston Red Sox but went 0-39 with 37 strikeouts in his Minor League career so shifted his focus to football instead. 246 career tackles, 6.5 sacks, 2 FF and an INT to his name so far.

2016 - Artie Burns, DB, to Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh first 1st round cornerback since 1997, seemed to suffer from confidence issues this last season and benched after being torched by Antonio Gates in one of the worst defensive seasons for a Steeler in recent history. Future doesn't look promising but hey, reclamation project for the Eagles? (The Steelers are notoriously bad at developing DB's under Tomlin).

2017 - Jabrill Peppers, DB, to Cleveland

Too early to pass judgement really, still seems to be finding his natural position in the secondary after a 45.5 PFF grade in 2017. Promising pick, but still plenty to prove.

2018 - Hayden Hurst, TE, to Baltimore

Another ex-baseball player here. I personally wasn't a fan of this pick but again it is far too early to pass judgement here. 13 receptions in 12 games for 163 yards and a TD in his rookie season.

2019 - ??? to Philly?

As you can see from the list, it's a real mixed bag in terms of success, with more of the picks trending towards being busts than successes. Our scouts will really have their work cut out to make our #25 pick this year really count as the last thing we want is a busted pick, but I see plenty of options at #25 that look like solid picks - it all comes down to whether we make the right choice. So long as we don't reach for need with our selection, I trust Howie, Doug, and Joe to make a strong pick come April. Who would you take at #25 and why, and does seeing the history of the pick alter your views at all? Let me know!
