NFL Trade Rumors: 49ers not interested in Nick Foles

Imagine not wanting to acquire the Super Bowl MVP!

When Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a season-ending ACL injury last week, there was some speculation the San Francisco 49ers might be interested in acquiring Nick Foles.

It appears that won’t be the case, however. NFL inside Adam Schefter reports the 49ers have no interest in acquiring Foles because they really believe in C.J. Beathard.

But the Niners will not trade for Foles and they will not bring back Colin Kaepernick -- a move some fans have called for -- because, as one team source said, they think Beathard will “be productive.”

Lol, good luck with that.

Schefter included another interesting note in his report about Foles.

San Francisco has five prime-time games remaining on its schedule, and some people within the league are hoping that the Niners trade for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, according to a source.

Interesting. So it sounds like there’s some league pressure for the 49ers to make a move. Maybe that pressure mounts if Beathard really struggles while starting in place of Garoppolo.

Although Foles provides nice insurance behind Carson Wentz, there certainly IS sense in trading him. Foles can opt of his contract after this season so he’ll likely be a free agent. If that’s the case, the best the Eagles can hope to receive for Foles is a 2020 third-round compensatory pick ... at best. Or they can trade him this season and likely get a worthwhile pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Trading Foles could clear $11 million in cap space for the Eagles. The combined cap savings and draft pick acquisition could then allow Philadelpia to make another big move, such as acquire Le’Veon Bell or Earl Thomas. NFL insider Jason La Canfora has recently floated the idea of the Eagles trading Foles on multiple occasions, so maybe there’s something to him doing that.

If the Eagles do trade Foles, it’s not like the cupboard is bare behind Wentz. Nate Sudfeld had an encouraging offseason. The team likes his potential and he’s shown the ability to at least be a solid backup.

The feeling here is that Foles WON’T be traded because it just doesn’t seem like there’s much of a market for him. Maybe that’ll change before the NFL trade deadline at 4:00 PM on October 30.
