I think Wentz will have a successful comeback and play at a high level. He plays for a smart coaching staff. You can see that they aren’t rushing him back. The coaches are trying to be smart. Remember RGIII and what happened with him late in 2012 and the playoff game? Mike Shanahan made some highly questionable decisions and they hurt Griffin’s career. Wentz has a strong O-line. Luck would have killed to play behind a line like this for his career. Instead, he’s had to deal with constant chaos in the backfield. You must protect the QB for him to be able to play well and to sustain that success.

The Lagos- born receiver brought his excellent form from last season into the 2018 season for the Super Bowl champion Eagles. In the Eagles’ win, ‘Swagholor’ lined up everywhere, from his preferred slot receiver position to playing on the outside, all the way to the backfield where he carried the ball and passed the ball. In the third quarter, with the Eagles dealing with a third and 5 from the Falcons 41 yard line, Agholor ran around on a reverse and threw a pass to QB Nick Foles for a 15-yard reception to extend the drive for the Eagles. Ajayi ran in the touchdown for the Eagles a few plays later. Agholor’s stats don’t tell the whole story, because despite catching 8 passes for just 33 yards, the receiver was heavily blanketed by opposing cornerbacks and had few opportunities to add yards after the catch (YAC)

The Eagles’ 18-12 win in the opener was won behind the strength of their defense’s performance inside the 20-yard line. The Falcons made five trips into the red zone against the Eagles and converted just one into a touchdown. They had four goal-to-go possessions and reached the end zone just once. Atlanta’s red zone struggles, dating to last season, have been well documented. But Jim Schwartz’s unit made life difficult for Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. Every team spends a great deal of time working on situational football, but several Eagles noted the extra time spent on the red zone this offseason.

How did Philadelphia end up so much higher than Atlanta when the Falcons gained more yards per play (4.6) than the Eagles (a miserable 3.6). The answer appears to be “third downs.” The Eagles went 8-for-16 on third downs, and converted another with a DPI penalty. The Falcons, on the other hand, converted just 4 of 15 third downs and failed to convert on their one fourth-down opportunity as well. In addition, while the Eagles weren’t moving forward as much as they wanted, they also weren’t moving backwards. Not including penalties -- so many penalties, sigh -- Philadelphia had only three plays all game that lost yardage. Atlanta had nine plays that lost yardage.

Reportedly working out former Ravens first-round pick Breshad Perriman on Monday and scheduling a workout Tuesday with former Browns first-round pick Corey Coleman, who reportedly wound up signing with the Patriots before the Eagles could look at him. If you’re an unemployed receiver, call the Eagles. They’re interested. While Doug Pederson may say the Eagles are happy with their current group of wide receivers, it’s clear from their actions that they recognize they need help. Which is understandable.

The hits keep coming for the Panthers offense as they finally gave us an update on the status of Greg Olsen, who left the Dallas game with an injury. The star tight end has refracted his right foot and will be re-evaluated “monthly.” This is the same injury that took him out for most of the 2017 season. However, Olsen is attempting to treat this injury with rehab instead of surgery so we cannot predict how much time he might miss based on his recovery last season. At this time it is unclear if the Panthers intend to keep him on the roster or place him on injured reserve (IR). An IR designation would sideline him for at least 8 weeks before he would be eligible to return. [BLG Note: Eagles play the Panthers in Week 7.]

Patricia is the first coach since Tom Cable with the Raiders in 2008 to lose his debut by 31 points or more. For a branch carefully pruned from the Belichick tree and replanted in the mineral-laden soil of Detroit, Patricia’s Lions looked like they were expecting a scrimmage session. Matthew Stafford threw four interceptions. His backup, Matt Cassel, threw one of his own. The running game, which got hyped all offseason as a much improved unit ready to do its part, somehow failed to reach the low bar set by its predecessors.
