Since this is a prediction post and all, I’ll start things off with one: there won’t be a whole lot of meaning in the Eagles’ most meaningful preseason game tonight.
It’s bold to say that a preseason game isn’t all that important, I know, but some would have you think otherwise.
For example, take those who’ve complained about the Eagles offense not looking very sharp to this point. I mean, yeah, it’d be great to see that unit look sharper against the Browns. But how much can you really expect that to happen? Philadelphia is still going to be without their starting quarterback (Carson Wentz), their starting left tackle (Jason Peters), two of their top three receivers (Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor; and maybe three of their top four if Mack Hollins doesn’t play), and their top three running backs (Jay Ajayi, Darren Sproles, and Corey Clement). In other words, struggles are to be expected.
The other side of the ball is a little different. Brandon Graham, who recently came off the PUP list, and Timmy Jernigan, who remains on the NFI list, are likely the only two defensive starters who won’t play. It’s possible the Eagles hold out Jalen Mills as well considering he’s been dealing with a minor issue. Either way, the point is that Jim Schwartz’s unit is less ravaged by injury right now. Knowing that, it’d be nice to see a good showing out of them, and I predict we’ll see that.
As far as the most interesting players to watch for in tonight’s game, I already covered that earlier today. We’ll just reiterate that Josh Adams is one of the biggest names to watch, assuming he even plays. I predict the rookie running back will have some nice flashes that will have everyone calling for him to be a lock on the 53-man roster. Considering his competition (Wendell Smallwood and Matt Jones) has looked pretty bad, Adams doesn’t have a high bar to clear.
Once again, the biggest goal is keeping everyone as healthy as possible. Hopefully that’s the case as we continue to pass the time until opening night on September 6.
