Carson Wentz among NFL players with best odds to win MVP

Comeback SZN

NFL: Super Bowl LII-Philadelphia Eagles vs New England Patriots Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Bovada recently revealed NFL MVP odds for the 2018 season and it probably won’t surprise you that a certain Philadelphia Eagles quarterback is near the top of the list.

Carson Wentz comes in with the third shortest odds of any NFL player at 19/2, only behind two others: Aaron Rodgers at 13/2 and Tom Brady at 7/1.

Wentz easily could’ve been the regular season MVP last year if he didn’t suffer an ACL/LCL injury in Week 14. Wentz actually threw more touchdown passes and fewer interceptions than the guy who did win MVP ... despite playing in 3.25 fewer games than Brady did.

Still, it’s not hard to see why Rodgers and Brady are ahead of Wentz. They obviously have longer track records of success and they’re not coming off knee surgery that took place in mid-December 2017.

It’ll be pretty interesting to see how Wentz fares in his third season in the league. The good news, although not official, is that it’s looking like he’s on pace to be ready by Week 1. It remains to be seen if Wentz’s injury will hamper his effectiveness at all. Hopefully that’s not the case.

Another thing to watch out for with Wentz is natural regression. That’s not to suggest he’ll suddenly be a bad player. But history tells us it will be tough for him to be AS good as he was last year. He could still have a pretty good season without reaching last year’s exact levels of production.

The feeling here is that Wentz is not a guy to bet against. He’s made a habit out of proving his doubters wrong. He’s a very special talent with an insane work ethic and a super sharp mind. It won’t be surprising if Wentz merits annual MVP conversation for years to come.

But wait! Wentz isn’t the only Eagles quarterback on the MVP odds list. Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles also makes an appearance down the bottom at 125/1. He’s tied with Sam Bradford (!) and Tyrod Taylor in that regard.

In an ideal world, Foles won’t have to play any meaningful snaps for the Eagles in 2018. Hopefully it’s Wentz who wins regular season MVP before joining Foles in the Super Bowl MVP club as well.
