But not just any tight end, as we know. A tight end named Dallas. The Eagles did this while the NFL Draft was being hosted in Dallas . And they traded up ahead of Dallas [the Cowboys] to take him. Talk about a power move.
We’ve since learned that Goedert received his first name because his father was a Cowboys fan. (Ensue booing.) However, Goedert became a Packers fan growing up due to the presence of his step-dad. So thankfully at least one member of his family loved him.
But now Goedert is a member of the Eagles. And the question is: should the rookie tight end have to change his name?
Goedert said Eagles fans have already begun to call for that very change.
“My Twitter has been blowing up and I think there are a few GoFundMe’s to change my name from Dallas to Philly. People are going to have a little bit of trouble with that, but hopefully I can make enough plays that they’ll get over it.”
One such GoFundMe page has raised a massive $5 so far.
Frankly, I’m surprised there isn’t more support for this very important cause. I mean, just think about how confusing it is to say “Dallas Sucks” now. Those two words alone make up approximately 44.6% of Bleeding Green Nation total comments.
I get that asking Goedert to legally change his first name might be too big of an ask. (But is it?)
But whether he actually changes his name or not, which he won’t, it’s important to remember that Eagles fans are not powerless in this situation. We can all simply refer to No. 88 as “Philly Goedert” from now. I know BGN Radio’s Michael Kist has already begun to do that.
I’m curious to see what you think about this. Should we only refer to the Eagles’ rookie tight end as Philly Goedert from now on? Does it matter? Does anything in life matter? You tell me.
