South Alabama defensive back Jeremy Reaves is one of 30 2018 NFL Draft prospects scheduled to meet with the Eagles in Philadelphia for an official pre-draft visit, according to the great Josh Norris.
Reaves being listed as a “defensive back” is indicative of his versatility. The 5-11, 190 pound defender originally played cornerback in college before switching to safety in 2017. He also has experience playing the nickel corner role.
Reaves is the third known safety prospect that the Eagles have reportedly brought to Philadelphia this offseason. It’s clear the Birds are doing serious homework on this position despite having Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod locked in as 2018 starters.
It’s quite possible the Eagles could view Reaves as a potential Jenkins replacement. At the very least, he could fill the third safety role (AKA the Corey Graham role) if he’s drafted by Philadelphia.
Reaves certainly boasts the kind of college production that Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas seemingly values. He finished his four years at South Alabama with 301 total tackles, 22 passes defensed, 20.5 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, eight forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and 1.5 sacks.
Don’t be surprised if the Eagles draft this player who was described as “one of the most physical secondary players in the country.”
Scouting report via NFL.com:
Overview: Reaves moved from cornerback to safety this season and was able to add functional weight without losing quickness. Reaves is a voracious run supporter, who moves pretty fluidly in coverage and offers the ability to play cover-two or in the box. He could end up falling short with some of the testing numbers, but he has the football character and nose for the football that will be enticing for a team looking for safety depth on Day 3.
Draft Projection: Rounds 5-6
NFL Comparison: Mike Adams
Sources Tell Us: “He was a running back in high school and he just has a natural feel for angles to the football. When you watch tape, you see him maneuver around traffic just like a running back would between the tackles. He’s tough and he’s a leader.” -- AFC team scouting director
