The Philadelphia Eagles added a new potential slot cornerback to their defense on Saturday afternoon by selecting Avonte Maddox in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
We’ll have more in-depth analysis on Maddox here at Bleeding Green Nation. For now, here are some instant reactions to the pick.
Mike Mayock on Maddox: if he was 6’0 he’d be a first round pick. Ran a 4.39 40. He’s quick footed, competes, and plays hard in run game.

Proof that Avonte Maddox is a great pick by the Eagles. pic.twitter.com/yjiOcmORiL

With pick 125, the Eagles select Avonte Maddox, CB, Pitt. A physical nickel who tested very well. I like the selection.

The #flyeaglesfly add some help in the secondary with Pittsburgh's Avonte Maddox. His 84.2 coverage grade ranked fourth among draft eligible ACC CBs in 2017. Are you happy with this pick?

Avonte Maddox is my guy. Congratulations, Eagles.

Avonte Maddox recorded the fastest 60 yard shuttle since at least 2006 among Combine DBs with a 10.72

Absolutely love Avonte Maddox (slot). My favorite fourth rounder on my board. #NFLDraft #DraftTwitter pic.twitter.com/gCwBUsxL6w

Maddox is 5-9, 184. That's fine for the slot. You need someone who is quick, agile and fast in there. Size can actually work against you. Malcolm Jenkins can play there vs big WRs.

I like a lot about Avonte Maddox. The one thing that concerned me was his ability to mirror in man coverage. If Schwartz thinks it can be cleaned up with technique, I really like the pick. Slot corner is a very important position.

I've only watched a little bit of Maddox, but I know a lot who love this kid. I'm excited to get into his tape study. From what I've heard it sounds like he's a more physical, yet shorter(arms) version of Brandon Boykin.

Roseman calls Maddox “extremely competive, twitchy.” Inside-outside, some return value
— Zach Berman (@ZBerm) April 28, 2018
Joe Douglas said that Avonte Maddox will get tossed in with the rest of the returner candidates. Has experience. The #Eagles don’t have obvious kick and punt guys at this time.

...
And now for some extra perspective from Pitt fans ...
Team captain. High character. Fast. Undersized. Hard worker. Tough...played with a broken arm
— Patrick Reven (@PatReven) April 28, 2018
I'm guessing they are transitioning him to slot. He's fast and has a good quick twitch. Too short to play outside, but he's very competitive. Fastest guy Pitt had last year. He does struggle finding the ball in the air, less of an issue in the slot

I watched him for 4 years at Pitt. His measurements and combine results show some promise, however, there is one key flaw.

This guy struggled to turn his head around unlike anyone I'd ever seen. PI's left and right like it was going out of style.
