With the 130th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select ... Josh Sweat, defensive end, Florida State.
This pick has the potential to be a steal for the Birds. Prior to the draft, some mock simulations had him going in the first round. BGN’s Ben Natan had Sweat as his No. 28 overall prospect.
Sweat, 21, played three seasons for the Seminoles. He finished his collegiate career with 138 total tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, six pass deflections, one interception, and one forced fumble.
Now, if Sweat is so good, why did he fall so far? The concern is likely over the surgery Sweat previously had on his knee. He even said he “almost lost his leg” back in 2014. That’s obviously a concern.
The Eagles clearly believe in Sweat enough to draft him despite any medical worries. If healthy, he gives the Eagles EVEN MORE talent and depth at defensive end, which is ridiculous. Philadelphia’s defensive line is stacked.
Scouting report via NFL.com:
Overview: Sweat has the length, frame and athletic qualities to fit right in as a 3-4 SAM or rush linebacker, but he needs to go to school with a position coach or a talented veteran to help unlock his pass rush potential. Sweat’s initial quickness and issues with contact balance could hinder his ability to play with his hand down. He has the ability to become a decent NFL starter but there is a wide disparity between his ceiling and floor thanks to concerns surrounding the current and future health of his knee.
Sources Tell Us: “I wish I could just hang onto my draft grade until after we saw how he does with combine medicals. If he checks out medically then I see a coachable player with a ton of upside as a pass rusher.” - AFC East Coast scout
Draft Projection: Rounds 3-4
NFL Comparison: Barkevious Mingo
Spider graph via Mockdraftable. Sweat is very long and athletic.
