NFL Draft Results: Eagles pick Avonte Maddox at No. 125

With the 125th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select ... Avonte Maddox, cornerback, Pittsburgh.

Maddox projects to be a nickel cornerback for the Eagles, which was a need for Philly after losing Patrick Robinson in free agency. Maddox measures in at a mere 5-9, 184 pounds.

Maddox, a team captain, played at Pitt for four years. His finished his collegiate career with 183 total tackles, 34 passes defensed, 13 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, seven (!) sacks, and three forced fumbles. He also has some experience as a returner with 19 kick returns for 437 yards (23.0 average) and one touchdown. Maddox returned nine punts for 49 total yards (5.4 average).

Overview: Maddox is sure to get a glowing review from his coaching staff as he has been a model leader and worker during his time at Pitt. While he plays with good toughness and has good athletic traits, his ability to stay connected in coverage has been problematic. Inconsistencies in man coverage combined with a smallish frame are a concern in my opinion, but his combination of long speed and short area quickness has him rising up the board.
