One of the really cool things about the last two NFL Drafts is that the Philadelphia Eagles came away with some really good first-round picks.
2016’s Carson Wentz is a franchise quarterback and was a legitimate MVP candidate last season. 2017’s Derek Barnett, who is only 21 years old, showed that he has a bright future as an NFL edge rusher.
Another cool part about these picks (to me, at least) is how these guys were first introduced to Philadelphia. Both players physically attended the draft and held up an Eagles jersey as they posed on stage with Roger Goodell after officially being selected.
I realize some (or most) probably don’t care about this aspect of the draft. It doesn’t matter if the player is there or not. It matters if the player is actually good. Often times the two of those things are connected, but it’s not always the case.
Still, there’s just something about the visual that I like. I appreciate getting to see the person that the Eagles pick live on the draft stage. I think it endears the player to his new fan base. It’s kind of lame when the name is called and all the broadcast shows is a highlights package.
Anyway, I bring this topic up because the NFL recently announced the 22 invitees to the 2018 NFL Draft. Here’s the complete list in alphabetical order.
CB Jaire Alexander
QB Josh Allen
RB Saquon Barkley
DT Taven Bryan
DE Bradley Chubb
QB Sam Darnold
DE Marcus Davenport
LB Tremaine Edmunds
LB Rashaan Evans
DB Minkah Fitzpatrick
LB Shaquem Griffin
RB Derrius Guice
CB Josh Jackson
QB Lamar Jackson
S Derwin James
OT Kolton Miller
QB Josh Rosen
LB Leighton Vander Esch
DT Vita Vea
CB Denzel Ward
OT Connor Williams
My question to you is: Will the Eagles pick one of these players?
I sure hope so. And not just because I usually like to see the Eagles pick a player at the draft. The fact that this year’s draft is being held in Dallas ups the ante. It’d just be so great for Cowboys fans to have to watch the Super Bowl Champion Eagles pick the stud who is going to torment them for years to come at No. 32.
And while all of these 22 names certainly won’t be in play, a number of them will. I’d say those realistically include: Alexander, Bryan, Evans, Guice, Miller, LVE, and Williams. (The Eagles could conceivably draft Griffin on Day 3 but obviously not at No. 32.) For the most part, I’d be happy with one of those picks.
Just for fun, let’s play a game with the attendees. Rank the players in order of which you think it’s likely the Eagles have them on their board. If you think the Eagles won’t draft one of the players attending this year’s draft, you’re a terrible person and I hate you. Just kidding. You can include those players as well, if you want.
For me, I’m going ...
Guice
LVE
Alexander
Bryan
Williams
Evans
Miller
