Latest update on the Vinny Curry situation

What’s going on with Vinny?

NFL: Denver Broncos at Philadelphia Eagles Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

One of the biggest decisions the Philadelphia Eagles have to make at this point is what they do with Vinny Curry. Keeping him at his $11 million cap number in 2018 isn’t realistic.

Ian Rapoport already reported the Eagles plan to either cut, trade, or restructure Curry’s contract. Which, you know, doesn’t really clear anything up.

Jason La Canfora more recently reported that there is some “real trade potential” with Curry given the lack of quality pass rush options in free agency and the 2018 NFL Draft.

Now we have even more updates on Curry. Here’s the latest from Derrick Gunn:

This matches up with what Rapoport already reported.

Here’s another update from Geoff Mosher.

Interesting.

The feeling here is that Curry might have to take a flat out pay cut, and not just a restructure, to stay with team. His willingness to do that remains to be seen. The fact that he grew up an Eagles fan and seems to love being here could make it possible.

But there’s also a very real chance this turns out to be like a frequent NFL situation where the team just cuts a player after the two sides can’t agree to altering the contract terms.

The Eagles could also trade Curry but the market likely won’t be hot for him given that other teams know Philadelphia might have to just cut him. Trading him would be more about taking whatever they can get and getting rid of his salary as opposed to actually getting great value.

With Curry’s salary set to be guaranteed this Friday, it won’t be long before the Eagles make an official decision on his future.
