The Philadelphia Eagles placed starting cornerback Jalen Mills on injured reserve, according to an official announcement from the team. The Inquirer first reported Mills’ season was over earlier on Saturday.
Mills joins Ronald Darby and Rodney McLeod as three out of four starting secondary players to end up on injured reserve this season. Malcolm Jenkins is the last man standing in that regard. Sidney Jones and Rasul Douglas figure to be the starting corners on the outside for the rest of the 2018 season.
In a corresponding transaction, the Eagles promoted practice squad defensive tackle Bruce Hector to the 53-man roster. One would imagine the signing of Hector doesn’t bode well for the status of Tim Jernigan for Sunday’s game against the Cowboys. Jernigan did not practice all week due to back spasms and was ruled questionable on the Eagles’ final injury report. That’s not ideal given the importance of the Eagles stopping the Dallas rushing attack led by Ezekiel Elliott.
Hector, an undrafted rookie free agent, has appeared in six games with the Eagles this season while bouncing back and forth between the roster and the practice squad. He’s played 51 of Philadelphia’s defensive backs.
Hector joins Fletcher Cox, Haloti Ngata, and Treyvon Hester as the four defensive tackles likely to be active against Dallas.
