The Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles face a serious challenge on the offensive side of the ball on Sunday. The 7th ranked DVOA defense of the Houston Texans’ defense boasts a loaded and disruptive front seven and their success starts with their run defense.
The Texans defense ranks 2nd in DVOA against the run, they allow they least yards per carry, least yards per carry on the road, least yards per carry on 1st & 10, the least amount of 10-plus and 20-plus yard runs, and the third least amount of rushing touchdowns.
This was the Colts longest run (excluding one scramble because scrambles are passing plays shut up) for 40 minutes.. look familiar? Eagles will try to wham too - pic.twitter.com/Bm5HXyC2T2— Michael Kist (@MichaelKistNFL) December 19, 2018
In the last three games, including against the Indianapolis Colts who run a good deal of the same concepts, the Texans are allowing only 2.7 yards per carry. We all know about Jadeveon Clowney and JJ Watt, but the Texans are getting significant contributions against the run from DJ Reader, Brandon Dunn, and Benardrick McKinney among others. That’s a long way to say that their run defense is very, very good.
It’s looking like a game that’s going to have to be run through the air, which is entirely possible for the Eagles. On The Kist & Solak Show #56, we talk about coverage types they can exploit, including quarters which is being echoed by Dan Orlovsky on 97.5 The Fanatic as I write this.
Benjamin Solak’s bold prediction was that Alshon Jeffery would have his highest yard output of the season, come find out why on The Kist & Solak Show! Stream it on the media player below or click here if the player doesn’t load. FLY EAGLES FLY!
