The Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles kept their playoff hopes alive with a thrilling road upset of the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football! They’ll still need some help, but it was an encouraging sign from a team that has largely failed to put together 60 minutes of spirited and competitive football all year.
The one thing we needed to see from the Eagles was their ability to play tough against a very good Rams’ team. While most counted them out, the Eagles found a way to rekindle some of their 2017 magic, if only for a night. Can they keep it going with Nick Foles under center? That remains to be seen, but stranger things have happened, as we know.
On the night Foles was solid and the offense was on the move early, which has been a rarity this season. 24/31, 270 yards, 0 touchdowns and 1 interception isn’t “playoff Foles” caliber stuff but he had a solid night overall with some highs and lows. What he does bring is calm leadership and a willingness to throw up some prayers. Considering the game was in Los Angeles, he may have also caused some inspirational déjà vu that spurred on the Eagles’ efforts.
On the defensive side of the ball, Fletcher Cox and Michael Bennett had their usual standout games and harassed Jared Goff for a better part of the night. I’ll be writing up a “Game Ball” piece, which is going to go to a member of the defense, but the important thing is that they were able to stave off a Rams’ comeback. In the end it was Jim Schwartz’s two favorite concepts colliding to end the game; the cover 0 blitz and the oft-criticized Picket Fence.
