Brett Favre thinks Doug Pederson would be a great choice for the Packers’ head coaching job

Following the Packers’ decision to fire long-time head coach Mike McCarthy, there’s a lot of speculation who the next Green Bay head coach might be. Brett Favre has taken his name out of consideration, but he did throw some other candidates out there ... including Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson. Via TMZ Sports (hat tip to 97.5 The Fanatic):

Q: If the organization called you to pick your brain, whether it was to coach or to coach in any capacity or to maybe find the next coach, would you be open to helping with that process?

FAVRE: Yeah, sure, I’d give them my opinion — and no one’s asked, not that they should. And I haven’t actually talked to any coaches. But I can think of several off the top of my head who, if the Packers, keeping in mind that Aaron Rodgers is the quarterback, would be great choices. Or at least in consideration. That would be Darrell Bevell, who Aaron knows well and took this year off. Young, energetic, great coach. Brian Daboll, who was at Alabama last year and is an offensive coordinator, was my quarterback coach with the Jets. I think he’s OC right now in Buffalo. Very young, energetic, creative mind. And another that comes to mind is Doug Pederson. Now, I don’t know if they can get him from Philly, or if he would even consider that. But there’s another young guy who is very creative and has proven he can win the big one.

Kind of weird that Favre would throw Pederson’s name out there considering the Eagles head coach just signed an extension through the 2022 season earlier this year. Not as weird when you consider Favre and Pederson are good friends and the former is probably just showing some love to his bud.

I’ll go out on a limb and say Pederson — the first head coach to win a Super Bowl with the Eagles — isn’t going to be available for the Packers. As disappointing as the offense has been this season, Philadelphia’s not going to be firing the coach who led them to their first Vince Lombardi Trophy less than a full year after Super Bowl LII.

While it won’t be Pederson, it’s not crazy to suggest the Packers might hire a former Eagles coach. Former Philadelphia quarterbacks coach and current Vikings offensive coordinator John DeFilippo is getting some buzz for that job. Check out these odds from Bovada:

Josh McDaniels 7/4

John DeFilippo 11/4

Lincoln Riley 11/4

Eric Bieniemy 10/1

Pete Carmichael 15/1

Matt LeFleur 15/1

Zac Taylor 15/1J

ohn Harbaugh 20/1

Freddie Kitchens 25/1

Kris Richard 25/1

Ron Rivera 25/1

Jeff Tedford 25/1

Gary Kubiak 50/1
