Alex Smith Injury: Redskins quarterback carted off after hurting leg/ankle

Significant NFC East development.

NFL: Houston Texans at Washington Redskins Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Redskins starting quarterback Alex Smith seemingly suffered a significant leg/ankle injury during Washington’s Week 11 game against the Houston Texans.

Smith went down awkwardly while being sacked by the Texans’ defense. I’d embed the clip here to show you what it looked like but it’s probably too gruesome for that. If you really want to watch, you can click here, but I’d advise against it.

Smith had to be carted off the field after getting hurt. That means backup quarterback Colt McCoy is now under center for Jay Gruden’s team. Washington does not carry a third string quarterback on their 53-man roster or their practice squad.

Smith’s injury could potentially open the door for the Philadelphia Eagles (and/or the Dallas Cowboys, unfortunately) to still win the NFC East. Note that the Eagles are scheduled to play Washington twice this season; once in Week 13 and then again in Week 17.

UPDATE: Yikes. This is awful.
