The Philadelphia Eagles waived defensive tackle Bruce Hector on Tuesday, according to an official announcement from the team. In a corresponding roster move, the Eagles promoted Treyvon Hester from the practice squad.
Hector originally signed with the Eagles as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft. He impressed the team enough for them to keep him on the 53-man roster for four games but it’s clear the coaching staff didn’t really trust him to play. Hector logged a mere 20 defensive snaps played in the month of September. The Eagles will likely sign Hector to their practice squad assuming he clears waivers.
Hester first signed to Philly’s practice squad a few weeks ago. Here’s what we wrote about him at the time:
The new guy, Hester, originally entered the league as a seventh-round pick by the Raiders in the 2017 NFL Draft. As a rookie, Hester played in 14 games (one start) and had nine tackles and one forced fumble. Hester made Oakland’s original 53-man roster last weekend but he got cut after Jon Gruden’s team claimed a player on waivers and needed to make room.
Speaking of waiver claims, the Eagles unsuccessfully tried to claim two defensive linemen earlier this week. It’s clear they’ve been looking for some more depth at the defensive tackle position. Hester is that guy for now.
With Timmy Jernigan starting the season on the non-football injury list, the Eagles have been forced to play Fletcher Cox more snaps than they ideally prefer. Perhaps Jim Schwartz will feel more comfortable instituting a heavier defensive tackle rotation with Hester on the team instead of Hector.
In other news, the Eagles signed linebacker Kyle Wilson to their practice squad. Philadelphia had a vacancy after promoting DeAndre Carter to the 53-man roster last week. Wilson, an undrafted free agent, signed with the Eagles back in May after Paul Worrilow suffered a season-ending injury.
Updated look at the Eagles’ practice squad:
LB Kyle Wilson
OL Josh Andrews
TE Billy Brown
LB Asantay Brown
S Tre Sullivan
WR Braxton Miller
WR Dorren Miller
DE Joe Ostman
CB Chandon Sullivan
In former Eagles news, our old friend Donnie Jones recently worked out for the Los Angeles Chargers. And he signed with them!
The New Orleans Saints, meanwhile, hosted tryouts for former Philly corners Byron Maxwell (!) and De’Vante Bausby.
