That isn’t trying to diminish his accomplishments, but rather not to let all that history be a factor in the game. Pederson made a brilliant comment. ‘This can’t be about the Patriots. This has to be about us.’ Somebody give that man a bag of Funyuns. That’s the perfect answer. It really ties into my recent posts about how good this team has been all year. If the Eagles execute…if the Eagles eliminate mistakes…they will win this game.

After looking at the offense’s performance against the Minnesota Vikings, it’s now time to study a stout defensive outing against a tough unit to keep out of the end zone. The Eagles gave up a touchdown on the opening drive and, after that, kept the Vikings from scoring. To me, the defensive performance all started up front with another nearly dominant outing from the defensive line. Fletcher Cox was phenomenal once again, making plays in the run game and generating pressure on Case Keenum all game long. Tim Jernigan owned the line of scrimmage. Brandon Graham was his usual relentless self. Vinny Curry was active against the run and the pass. Derek Barnett had, arguably, the biggest play of the entire game. The Patriots are heading back to the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year. New England needed to come from behind to win the AFC Championship Game, but to me at least, it seemed almost inevitable. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady simply did what it is they seemingly always do, and found a way to win a close game late. For me, the story of the AFC Championship Game was New England’s ability to protect Brady. The Patriots didn’t have much of run game (and seemingly didn’t plan to have much of one), so this game was going to come down to how well their offensive line could hold up in pass protection. They certainly did their part.

This is a formula that needs to be a part of Philly’s Super Bowl plan as well. The Eagles want to negate the Patriots’ offense. Yes, Brady and the Patriots’ offense will get their yards, but make them earn every one. The Patriots’ offense is littered with pre-snap shifts and motions; they do it to gather information for their players before the ball is snapped, and force the defense to communicate. The Eagles need to have championship-level communication on defense, from the first snap through the last. Don’t give New England anything free because you forgot to talk. The Eagles’ motto needs to be bend, but don’t break. When New England gets down in the red zone, can Schwartz and his players scheme a few ways to get off the field on third down and make the Patriots trot Stephen Gostkowski out? If the Eagles can find a way to turn two Brady-led red-zone drives into six points and not 14, the parade is one step closer.

And then there’s Doug Pederson. The Eagles head coach has had two strong seasons, thanks in part to stability at the corodinator position with Frank Reich and Jim Schwartz. Since arriving in Philadelphia, the Eagles rank 4th in points scored, 5th in points allowed, and 2nd in points differential.

What can be taken from these games, though, is how these teams disrupted Brady and the weapons he was playing alongside. The Buccaneers pressured Brady on 40% of his dropbacks and the Dolphins affected Brady on 36% of his dropbacks (according to Pro Football Focus), which rank among the highest pressure rates against the Patriots all year and join the Los Angeles Chargers (almost 50% pressure rate) as the outings with the three lowest point totals of the season. The Eagles have a fantastic pass rush and they will have to affect Brady all evening if they are going to disrupt the Patriots march towards another championship. There isn’t much Philadelphia can take from the Patriots performances over the first five weeks of the season, but pressuring Brady is always the blueprint to success.

Rob Gronkowski left the Patriots’ AFC Championship matchup against the Jaguars after getting hit in the helmet by Barry Church. Gronkowski was immediately taken to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion, which the medical staff confirmed. The team ruled him out for the remainder of the game. He’s in the league’s concussion protocol now, but the team is “optimistic” that he’ll be cleared to practice and play in the Super Bowl against the Eagles.
