FIRST QUARTER

The Giants won the toss and elected to defer. Carson Wentz and the Eagles offense up first.

LeGarrette Blount was in the backfield for the first play, but the Eagles dropped back to pass. Wentz got sacked. Darren Sproles ran for a yard on second down. Jason Kelce committed a false start at home. Wentz threw to Alshon Jeffery short of the sticks on third down. Not a great start! Punt.

Donnie Jones had a great punt that had a chance to be downed at the 1-yard line. Dexter McDougle bumped into Kamu Grugier-Hill, however, and it was a touchback. Dumb. Doug Pederson challenged the ruling but it was upheld. To me, it looked like none of the players were in the end zone when the ball was touched. But I guess not.

As the Giants took over on offense for the first time, the Eagles had Jalen Mills follow Odell Beckham Jr. around the formation. New York benefited from a Nigel Bradham facemask penalty where Brandon Marshall actually grabbed Bradham’s first, but no flag on the Giants. No matter. The Giants ended up having to punt anyway after a 3rd-and-1 stop.

Wentz got sacked again on the Eagles’ first play of the second drive. Chance Warmack allowed the hit. Corey Clement got his first NFL carry: a gain of one yard. Wentz connected with Jeffery short of the sticks again. Punt.

The Giants drove to the Eagles’ 38-yard line before punting the ball. Malcolm Jenkins came up with a great tackle for loss on third down. Darren Sproles fielded the ball at the 10, so it was a mere 28-yard net difference for New York. Lol at Ben McAdoo.

Blount received a sarcastic cheer after taking a carry for three yards on first down. Blount received even bigger cheers after running up the middle for a 17-yard gain and bowling over two Giants defenders in the process. Beastly. Torrey Smith dropped another pass, his third of the season. Bad. The Eagles got into 4th-and-1 and went for it. Wentz quarterback sneak was successful. Worth noting the Eagles had Sproles, and not Blount, in the backfield on that conversion attempt.

SECOND QUARTER

Wendell Smallwood (!) did a great job of picking up a blitz to give Wentz time to hit Nelson Agholor for a first down. Then Sproles went down and limped off the field. Yikes, that’s not good. Wentz pulled off a magical scramble on 3rd-and-8 to move the Eagles deeper into the red zone. He’s a freaking magician with those.

Blount received cheers as the Eagles brought him back into the game. Then he immediately ran for a 5-yard touchdown. Not bad! The refs reviewed the play, however, and it was overturned with the ball at the 1-yard line. Didn’t matter. Blount ran it again and scored the touchdown. Then he got flagged for taunting (rolling the football at Landon Collins) after the play. Nice 18-play, 90-yard drive for the Birds. Eagles lead, 7-0.

The Giants took over and got a few first downs. Then Eli Manning aired it deep to Brandon Marshall and ... PICKED OFF! Great interception by Rasul Douglas on a ball that was a little underthrown. Impressive play by the rookie cornerback. The only bad news is that Jordan Hicks went to the locker room on this Giants drive.

The Eagles put Stefen Wisniewski in at left guard to replace Warmack. What is going on. Warmack didn’t get hurt. Smallwood showed up with some nice runs on this drive. Wentz had Jeffery open deep for a touchdown but he overthrew his receiver by a lot. Big missed opportunity. The Eagles went for it on 4th-and-8 around midfield but Wentz got sacked. Philly could have tried to punt and pin the Giants deep with a little over 2 minutes remaining in the first half. Then again, the math said to go for it.

New York took over and moved into field goal range. Fletcher Cox went down and slowly walked to the locker room. The Giants got to the 1-yard line and scored a touchdown. Actually, nope, Sterling Shepard didn’t cross the goal line with the ball. Then the Giants scored a touchdown again. Except Shepard dropped the ball as he fell to the ground out of bounds. So the Giants go for it on 4th-and-1, and ... STUFFED! Turnover on downs. Wow. Huge stop! Well done, Vinny Curry.

See, Doug knew what he was doing all along!

;)

THIRD QUARTER

Cox and Hicks weren’t with the Eagles defense at the start of the second half. Then they were ruled out. Brandon Graham pressured Manning into an incompletion. Then Mychal Kendricks broke up a pass by hitting the receiver as it got to him. Giants go three and out. Torrey Smith fielded the punt with Sproles ruled out.

The Eagles drove into field goal range. They ran one of those beloved bubble screen passes on third down and it went for a whopping one yard. Surprise. Jake Elliott’s 52-yard field goal attempt hooks left. No good.

Manning comes back throwing and gets picked. Kendricks deflects a pass and Patrick Robinson tracks the ball in the sun for the interception. Defense comes up big yet again.

The Eagles put Warmack back in the game. The Eagles are apparently rotating their left guards. Wentz moved the chains on a quarterback sneak. Then he aired it out deep to Jeffery while on the run and Eli Apple got called for pass interference near the goal line. Ertz throws to a wide open Ertz in the end zone and the tight end drops it. Brutal. But then Ertz redeems himself as the Eagles run the same play and Ertz secures it for the touchdown. Eagles lead, 14-0.

The Giants move into the red zone thanks to some catches by Odell Beckham Jr. Jalen Mills comes up with a big pass breakup on 3rd-and-2. New York then goes for it at 4th-and-2 at the Eagles’ 13-yard line. Manning’s pass is INCOMPLETE. Broken up by Robinson. The Eagles’ defense stands tall again. Credit Tim Jernigan for generating pressure on that fourth down stop.

FOURTH QUARTER

Wisniewski back in the game at guard. Wentz’s pass for Jeffery on third down is incomplete. Janoris Jenkins had pretty good coverage on him. Eagles punt and Donnie Jones shanks it.

Douglas whiffs on a short completion to Marshall to set up the Giants in the red zone. Then Manning connects with Beckham Jr. in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. Pretty nice throw and catch by the Giants. After scoring, Beckham got down on all fours and pretended to be a doing peeing on a fire hydrant. OK. 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty. Eagles lead, 14-7.

The Eagles took back over and immediately turned the ball over. Ertz got stripped by Landon Collins. Awful. Just can’t do that in that spot.

The Giants take over with great field position. Then they score a touchdown. Manning to Beckham for a one-handed score. Nothing Mills could really do there. Not great! Tie game, 14-14.

The Eagles had to punt after Jeffery got called for pass interference on third down. Things not going so good.

Giants take over, Manning hits Shepard for a 77-yard touchdown. Absence of Rodney McLeod really being felt there. Giants lead, 21-14.

Wentz comes back by hitting Torrey Smith for a first down. Then he targets Smith again deep which draws a pass interference penalty. The flag looked questionable and the ball looked uncatchable to me but I’m not the ref. A 15-yard run by Clement, the first of his NFL career, tied the game. Tie game, 21-21.

Jenkins got called for pass interference on a deep pass to Beckham Jr. The Giants took over in the red zone but had to settle for a field goal with 3:08 to play. Giants lead, 24-21.

The Eagles relied on their running game to get into filed goal range. Good runs from Smallwood and Blount moved them down the field. A facemask penalty from Jeffery moved the Eagles back from the 31 to the 46. A completion to Ertz put it back at the 34. Wentz’s pass to Jeffery on third down was off target. The Eagles’ 46-yard attempt is ... good! Clutch kick. Tie game, 24-24.

The Giants can’t get anything going on a late drive. They have to punt.

Eagles take over with 13 seconds remaining on their own 38. Wentz hits Jeffery along the sideline to set up a 61-yard field goal attempt. Elliot’s kick is ... GOOD! IT’S GOOD! IT’S GOOD!!! IT’S GOOD!!!!! Eagles win, 27-24.

EAGLES WIN THE GAME!
