Eagles roster cuts: The punter battle is over

As expected.

The Philadelphia Eagles punter “battle” has come to an end. The Eagles are keeping veteran Donnie Jones instead of undrafted free agent rookie Cameron Johnston, according to a report from NJ.com.

This news doesn’t come as a surprise, but there was some though this competition might be closer than previously thought after the Eagles traded Jon Dorenbos earlier this week. And aybe it was closer than we realized.

A practice squad punter? That’d be ... new. I’d be surprised if that happens. But maybe the Eagles really like Johnston and want to keep him around for when Jones hangs them up. For what it’s worth, Jones did say this summer he wants to play for four more seasons.

In other Eagles roster cut news, backup center/guard Josh Andrews and defensive-tackle-turned-offensive-tackle Taylor Hart have also reportedly been released. Andrews made the roster last year but missed most of training camp due to a broken hand injury. Hart did better than expected in his transition to a new position. It seemed like there was a chance the Eagles might keep him as a 10th or 11th offensive lineman. But he’s gone instead.

The Eagles’ roster now stands at 67 players. 14 more cuts to go. Follow along with our Eagles roster cuts tracker HERE.
