FIRST QUARTER

The Eagles won the coin toss and elected to defer — what’s new? Chiefs start with the ball first.

Jaylen Watkins got the start at first team cornerback opposite of Jalen Mills. Whew. The Chiefs threw at the man he was covering, Travis Kelce, right away for a KC first down. Kelce pulled in another reception after beating Malcolm Jenkins clean. Pass breakups for Mychal Kendricks and Jenkins ultimately forced the Chiefs into settling for a short field goal. That’s a win for the Eagles. Chiefs lead, 3-0.

Wendell Smallwood got the start at running back. Carson Wentz threw to Alshon Jeffery on Philly’s first offensive play for a first down. Then Darren Sproles ran for 12 yards. Then Wentz hit a wide open Torrey Smith over the middle for another first thanks to great protection from the offensive line. Wentz hit Jeffery on third down to put the Eagles in the red zone. Trey Burton did a great job of clearing out space for Jeffery while somehow not committing offensive pass interference. Wentz targeted Smith in the end zone but the ball went off the receiver’s fingertips. Gotta catch it. Eagles have to settle for a field goal after a third down screen pass to Smallwood goes nowhere. Jake Elliott drills his first kick with Philly from 34 yards out. Tie game, 3-3.

Jordan Hicks had an awesome tackle on Kelce on second down. It didn’t matter, though, because Watkins gave up a completion to Tyreek Hill and whiffed on a tackle attempt that could have stopped him short of the sticks. To make matters worse, Fletcher Cox limped off the field. Then Hill roasted Watkins deep but Smith overthrew him in the end zone. Fortunate. Starting safety Rodney McLeod (hamstring) also limped off the field and to the locker room. Ruled questionable to return. The Eagles brought a blitz on third down and forced Smith into a throwaway. Chiefs have to punt.

SECOND QUARTER

Wentz hits Sproles on a swing pass for a first down. Behold, a swing pass that worked! Then Isaac Seumalo allowed a sack on Wentz. Got beat clean by a swim move from KC defensive tackle Chris Jones. Just not a great start to the season for the Eagles’ new left guard. Philly got forced into a punt.

Watkins tweaked his hamstring during punt coverage. ANOTHER injury to Philly’s secondary. He walked back to the locker room.

Brandon Graham got called offsides on the first play of KC’s drive. Mychal Kendricks exploded into the backfield for a nice tackle for loss. Rasul Douglas, in for Watkins, did a nice job of tackling Hill immediately after a short catch. The Eagles sent a blitz on second down and Kendricks came up with the sack with some help from Derek Barnett. Man, who saw this coming from Kendricks?! Eagles stop the Chiefs on third down and force a punt.

Torrey Smith dropped his second pass of the day on a play where Wentz scrambled, avoided a free rusher, and gave his receiver a chance to make the play. Great play by Wentz. Just needs some help from the pass catchers. Wentz hit Ertz for a third down conversion. Seumalo allowed ANOTHER sack on the next third down and the Eagles had to punt. Yeesh. Seumalo getting killed out there.

Hicks put a hit on Smith that caused the Chiefs quarterback to get banged up (shoulder). He stayed in the game, though. Cox sacked Smith on 3rd-and-5 to force a punt.

Sproles had a nice little return ... and then fumbled. Awful. Killer mistake by one of the team’s most trusty players. And it was the long snapper, James Winchester (former Eagle!) who forced the ball out. Chiefs take back over at the Eagles’ 24. Graham sacks Smith. Philadelphia’s defense holds on to force the Chiefs to a 39-yard field goal. Really key stop there.

The Eagles took over with 17 seconds left in the half. And then something crazy happened! Wentz threw a pass down the field that was overthrown and tipped up into the air by Terrance Mitchell. Ertz grabbed the ball in the air and ran it down to the red zone!

The Eagles attempted a 30-yard field goal and it was good. Except no it wasn’t because Andy Reid iced Philly with the timeout. Elliott’s second attempt was ... wide left. Thanks for nothing, rookie. Should have been a tie game.

THIRD QUARTER

McLeod and Watkins were ruled out of the game.

At least the Eagles started with the ball in the second half. Smith caught TWO (!) passes on a drive that took the Eagles to around midfield but stalled. Punt.

Timmy Jernigan threw Kareem Hunt out of bounds with one hand on the Chiefs’ first drive of the second half. Chris Long sacked Smith on third down to force another punt. Eagles pass rush is EATING (just as someone predicted).

Wentz connected with Jeffery and Mack Hollins (first career catch) to put the Eagles around midfield. A nice screen to Sproles and a run from Smallwood put Philly in the red zone. Wentz hit Jeffery for his first TOUCHDOWN as an Eagle! The play was originally ruled down at the 1-yard line but Doug Pederson wisely challenged. Clear touchdown. Ruling overturned for an Eagles score! Great drive. Eagles lead, 10-6.

The Chiefs got the ball back and scored a touchdown of their own. The Chiefs’ offensive line opened a big gap in the middle of the line and Hunt ran through it 52 yards to the house. A really poor tackle attempt from Corey Graham, who is in with McLeod out, allowed Hunt to score. Chiefs lead, 13-10.

A Travis Kelce unsportmanslike penalty on the TD allowed the Eagles to take over with decent starting field position.

FOURTH QUARTER

Wentz fumbled but recovered. He seems to do that a decent amount. Wentz overthrew a pass while taking a huge shot on second down. He got right back up and ran for a first on 3rd-and-13. That’s toughness. The Eagles moved into the red zone thanks to some nice catches for Hollins. God, he’s unstoppable. Wentz had Smallwood streaking up the seam open for a touchdown but Wentz didn’t seem to see him. 3rd-and-7 and Wentz lobs it up to Jeffery ... incomplete. Jeffery got away with offensive pass interference on that one. Elliott nails the field goal from 40 yards out. Phew. Tie game, 13-13.

Three-and-out for the Chiefs on their first offensive drive of the fourth quarter. Douglas came up with a clutch pass breakup on third down. That might have been a touchdown if he didn’t get his hand on that. Chiefs punt.

Wentz rushed for a first and looked goofy while doing it. Great stuff.

Then Wentz threw a pick on a pass that got tipped by a lineman. Ugh. Just like last week. Not great stuff. Wentz seems to have a good deal of tipped passes for a 6-5 dude.

Vinny Curry had a great chance to sack Smith on third down but he failed to bring the quarterback to the ground. Smith rushes for the first down instead. Terrible. Gotta finish that. Smith flips it to Kelce for the shovel pass touchdown. Vintage Andy Reid. Chiefs lead, 20-13.

Eagles take over and Wentz takes a sack on first down. Dropped pass by Ertz on second down. Incompletion on third down with pressure bearing down on Wentz. Punt.

Jalen Mills got beat deep by Albert Wilson. The Chiefs marched down the field and Hunt pounded it in. Good thing the Eagles don’t have that guy. Chiefs lead, 27-13.

Wentz sacked again. Third one allowed by Seumalo. Eagles move the ball down the field. Another sack allowed by Seumalo, that’s four. Philly drives into the end zone and Wentz hits Nelson Agholor for a garbage time touchdown. Chiefs lead, 27-20.

Or maybe not a garbage time touchdown! The Eagles recover an onside kick by Elliott! Great job by Trey Burton.

With five seconds left and the ball on the Eagles’ 39-yard line ... the pass is incomplete. Wentz aired it out in the end zone but the ball was tipped away. Game over.

FINAL SCORE: Eagles lose to the Chiefs, 27-20.
