Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Joe Walker was fined $24,309 for a late hit on Washington Redskins wide receiver/punt return Jamison Crowder, as noted by CSN Philly’s Dave Zangaro.
Walker’s hit occurred during the first play of the fourth quarter of Philadelphia’s Week 1 win over Washington. Watch below.
Walker was flagged for a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on the play. Can’t take a shot at a guy’s head like that.
Due to the flag, Washington started at their 36-yard line (instead of their 21-yard line) and drove down to the Eagles’ 14-yard line but an interception by Jalen Mills in the red zone bailed Philadelphia out.
Walker, a 2016 seventh round pick, has a base salary of $465,000 in 2017. That means this fine is about 5.2% of his base salary. That’s not nothing.
It goes without saying that Walker will need to be more cautious moving forward. Both for the sake of the team and his paycheck.
