The Philadelphia Eagles made 16 roster moves on Friday evening, according to an official announcement from the team.
First, the team placed injured rookie cornerback Sidney Jones on the reserve/non-football injury list. That means he’ll miss at least the first six weeks of the 2017 season, as expected. He won’t count towards a roster spot, however.
The Eagles are waived two players with injury settlements: Paul Turner and Matt McGloin. Turner missed the entire preseason and McGloin was just bad.
In addition to these moves, the Eagles straight up cut 13 players. The roster now stands at 70, which means 17 more moves need to be made to get down to the 53-man limit by 4:00 PM ET tomorrow on Saturday, September 2.
Full list of cuts below with brief explanations.
LB Don Cherry - Depth linebacker who lacks raw talent. Strong practice squad candidate.
DT Winston Craig - Undrafted defensive tackle. The Eagles are already deep at DT.
WR Rashard Davis - The Eagles signed him late in camp. Just a body at receiver.
TE Anthony Denham - Had some nice moments in the spring but missed a lot of training camp with a calf injury. Got outplayed by Billy Brown.
QB Dane Evans - Undrafted rookie QB was just a camp arm. Maybe he’ll be back on the practice squad?
LB Carlos Fields - Eagles sign him earlier this week as a body for the fourth preseason game.
CB Aaron Grymes - One of the more notable cuts on this list, but not particularly surprising. Grymes had a good summer with the Eagles last offseason. He probably would have made the team if he didn’t get hurt. Grymes looked good in spring practices this year; he even received some first team reps in the slot. But the former CFL corner didn’t stand out in the preseason this year. So he’s gone.
DE Jake Metz - Eagles claimed Metz off waivers for an extra body in the fourth preseason game.
C Tyler Orlosky - Orlosky was Philadelphia’s top ranked undrafted free agent signing. Some draft experts thought he’d go as high as the third round. The Eagles were using Orlosky at guard instead of his usual starting position, center, by the end of camp. Maybe Orlosky ends up on the practice squad.
T Victor Salako - Eagles signed this UDFA after a tryout in rookie minicamp. Just an extra camp body at tackle.
LB Christian Tago - Same boat as Carlos Fields. To his credit, Tago did come up with the fumble recovery that almost allowed the Eagles to steal a meaningless win last night.
DT Gabe Wright - Might have been able to make the roster as a fifth defensive tackle if the Eagles didn’t already have so much depth there.
TE Adam Zaruba - The former rugby player gave it a good try. He showed some nice blocking skills.
