The Case for Chance Warmack

Hi all,

Given Brandon Brooks went down injured yesterday at practice, it got me thinking more on a subject that I have pondered a few times over the summer. Brooks was replaced by Chance Warmack on first team reps, and it made me very excited to see that the coaching staff may have some real confidence in, or, falling short of that, optimism for his role on the Eagles.

I have read more projected 53 man roster articles than I can count at this point, and I have noticed several leaving Warmack off of the offensive line group. I have thought since we signed him that I want to at least give the guy a shot for a year. Let's remember - this guy was a former 10th overall pick in 2013 as a guard! That's not exactly a common occurrence. Let's also remember that he was coached at Alabama by none other than Jeff Stoutland, the Eagles' OL coach. Stoutland has already impressed me with his work on the Eagles young linemen - Big V showed remarkable improvement over the course of last season in which he was more or less thrown right into the fire to begin with. Seumalo has improved to the point where he seems to be a lock as well. Giving Warmack a chance (sorry I had to) to work a full year with the coach who helped him become a top 10 pick could be just what he needs to reignite his career, even if it means he is a rotational guy.

I definitely have some PTSD from the idea of taking a flier on a young talent from Tennessee who has underwhelmed (goodbye DGB, we hardly knew ye). However, this situation isn't apples to apples. We hoped for DGB to make big plays and he didn't deliver. Warmack will be relied upon at most to be a rotational guy to start, and if he really impresses, we can give him a bigger role. Given our OL depth, I just don't see the downside in giving him a shot to prove his top-10 pedigree.

I'd love to hear other thoughts on this!

Cheers,

Julian
