Cris Carter had some pretty interesting things to say about the on-going Ezekiel Elliott situation in an appearance on FS1’s UNDISPUTED today. According to Carter, Elliott is very likely to receive a suspension from the NFL within the next 48 hours. Check out the complete transcript below:
Contrary to what Jerry [Jones] is hearing, I’ve heard that we shouldn’t be surprised —- and especially after you’ve played this extra preseason game. Now people will try to say because Jerry was being inducted into the [Pro Football Hall of Fame], well maybe the league didn’t want the suspension or a ruling, potential ruling, or potential suspension, to come out during the Hall of Fame week. Now, that really has nothing to do with it. If you look at the DB, the starting DB for the Atlanta Falcons, [Jalen] Collins, he just got suspended.
This [week] is really kind of when the league starts. That extra, that fifth preseason game for Hall of Fame week, but this is really the four weeks.
Now for me, in the next 48 hours, I would be shocked if Zeke was not suspended. Like, I’ll be shocked. If we get to Thursday ...
Because, based on the information that’s going to come out, it’s going to be fairly easy to determine that something happened to this woman in her four days of being with Zeke.
Now we’re not talking about ... (long pause) ... I mean this is just pure ... (pause) ... assault or domestic violence. So I’m being sensitive because there is a victim here. So for me, this is a ... it’s a great opportunity to continue to learn. We’ve learned an awful lot in the last two years dealing with the National Football League and its players being involved in altercations. And there’s been a precedent set not only on the assault and domestic violence side, saying that there would be a minimum of six games on that side. But there was a precedent set with the GOAT in Tom Brady when they suspended him for on the field conduct, four games. So the bright star that we have in our game, Tom Brady, they suspended him.
And when the [Zeke] information comes out, there are going to be some similarities as far as what happened. Information that might have, that he had been advised possibly to give up, that was destroyed. So there’s going to be a number of things that will come out that people will be able to determine not only did something happen, but who is the person responsible for that.
And the precedent has been set in the league with Tom with a four game suspension. So that part right there — I don’t want to get into what exactly he’s going to get — but from what I’m hearing it will be based on those two precedents. It will be in that [four to six game] range.
Wow. There’s a lot to take in there. Potential destroyed evidence is new and certainly noteworthy.
And then there’s the mention of Elliott’s suspension being longer than what’s previously been suggested. Adam Schefter has been saying the suspension might only last for a game or two. Now Carter is saying Elliott could miss two to four more games on top of that.
The Cowboys missing Elliott for any amount of time would be a big loss for Dallas. He’s clearly the most important player on their roster. Missing one or two games could be enough to make a difference in the NFC playoff picture. Six games? That could shift the power in the NFC East entirely.
The Eagles, along with the rest of the NFL, will be eager to see what happens with Zeke. I’m sure the Birds won’t be too upset about a key rival missing their star player for any amount of time.
For reference, here’s a look at the Cowboys’ first six games in 2017.
Week 1 - vs. New York Giants
Week 2 - at Denver Broncos
Week 3 - at Arizona Cardinals
Week 4 - vs. Los Angeles Rams
Week 5 - vs. Green Bay Packers
Week 6 - BYE
Week 7 - at San Francisco 49ers
