221 days have passed since the Philadelphia Eagles have played a football game. Thankfully, that streak ends tonight. The Eagles will be back in action with a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers starting at 8:00 PM ET.
The Eagles are in a much different place than they were this time one year ago. Last offseason featured a lot of change with Doug Pederson being hired as the new head coach and Carson Wentz being drafted as the eventual starting quarterback. We were excited to see Wentz enter the game as the third string quarterback against the Buccaneers’ backups last preseason.
Now Pederson is heading into Year 2 with Wentz as the undisputed starter. Since that’s the case, we’ll only get to see No. 11 for a very limited amount of snaps tonight. Here’s hoping we at least get to see a glimpse of Wentz’s improvement that he’s shown during offseason practices.
Once the starters are out, Matt McGloin and the backups (band name potential) will take over. The game will immediately become a lot more boring in some ways but it’ll still be interesting to monitor the players competing for roster spots (more on that here).
One of the most critical battles is the cornerback position. The Packers won’t be playing Aaron Rodgers but the Eagles’ corners will obviously be worth watching the whole game. Unfortunately they might not be too hard to miss if Green Bay’s receivers are lighting them up like Wentz has in training camp. The Birds desperately need someone(s) to step up.
Overall, it’ll be nice to see Eagles football back, even if the game doesn’t count. Here’s hoping everyone plays well while managing to stay healthy.
Score prediction: 28-24, Eagles win.
