Derek Barnett officially signed his rookie contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to an announcement from the team. This signing means all eight of Philadelphia’s picks from the 2017 NFL Draft are now under contract.
Barnett’s deal is projected to be worth $12.8 million over four years and includes a $7.5 million signing bonus. As a first round pick, there is a fifth-year team option attached to Barnett’s four-year deal.
The Eagles drafted Barnett with the No. 14 overall pick in this year’s draft. They wouldn’t have had the selection if it weren’t for the Eagles trading Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings shortly before the beginning of the 2016 NFL season.
Barnett will immediately challenge for playing time as a rookie. The Eagles like to rotate their defensive ends so Barnett shouldn’t have a hard time seeing the field early on in his career.
Barnett has made a nice early impression so far. Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz recently praised Barnett for his efforts in practice.
