NFL Draft Rumors: One reporter “gets the sense” the Eagles won’t pick Joe Mixon

Though it certainly seems like the Eagles might be open to selecting controversial running back prospect Joe Mixon in the 2017 NFL Draft, one Philadelphia reporter doesn’t believe it will ultimately happen.

During his debut podcast, Howard Eskin of SportsRadio 94WIP said he “gets the sense” the Eagles won’t be taking Mixon. Here’s a complete transcript of what he had to say. Bold emphasis is mine.

“The more and more that I hear certain things, I just don’t think it’s going to be the Eagles [who draft Joe Mixon]. Now if he gets to the seventh round, which is impossible to happen, the Eagles would certainly think about it. Maybe even the sixth round, but he’s not going to get there either.”

“The Eagles had a workout scheduled for Joe Mixon. I don’t know what happened, but I know it was, I believe — well, it was cancelled. I don’t know if it was rescheduled or not. There are people obviously from the team that have spoken to him. In the course of going over everything in the draft, you want to speak to him.”

“They worked out [Dalvin] Cook, and Cook is a really good running back. But I don’t think they’re going to take a running back in the first round. And I don’t think [Cook] will be available for them in the second round. Now his problem is not as severe as Mixon.”

“The second that Joe Mixon would be drafted, the absolute second, and television stations and social media already have the video loaded of him punching that woman. There’s no excuse for a, he was not a professional athlete, but an athlete with his strength to hit a woman. There’s no reason for any man to hit a woman. None. None. And that is the first thing that will be mentioned for whichever team that drafts Joe Mixon. And if the Eagles draft Joe Mixon, that would be a problem. That would be a problem because, especially in Philadelphia, there would be so much made of that, and there should be. Nobody should hit a woman. The woman suffered multiple fractures.

So I just get the sense from different people that I talk to that the Eagles are backing off more and more from Joe Mixon. Because they’ll be able to find a running back. They’ll find a running back. I don’t know what round it’ll be in. I don’t know if they’ll find a running back from another team. Remember, when there’s a draft, there’s a lot more players coming into the league, and then there’s teams that release players that can still play. As we’ve seen in the past, there are players on a lot of teams, and this happens, you get released by a team and still has juice in the tank, and you can still play. So they’ll get a running back somewhere else. I just get the sense that it won’t be Joe Mixon.”

Eskin is plugged in to the Eagles (lest you forget, he was all over the Carson Wentz trade up rumors last year) so his words are worth weighing. And it sounds like he’s hearing something here in regard to Mixon.

It’s a little interesting to hear the Eagles canceled their workout with Mixon. Eskin was first to report that workout a few weeks ago. He didn’t rule out the possibility it was rescheduled, however. To be determined if we hear more about this leading up to the draft.

For what it’s worth, the majority of Bleeding Green Nation readers want the Eagles to draft Mixon.

Personally, I don’t feel the same way. I’d love for the Eagles to upgrade the running back position, but I don’t think he’s the best answer, all things considered.

Naturally, there’s already a lot of Mixon fatigue in the Eagles fanbase. The topic has been discussed a lot by now. That certainly won’t change if/when the Eagles draft Mixon. It’ll be the only thing people talk about for a long time.
