Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State
The Jets seem like the Bears of the AFC. A team drifting without a quarterback, a true franchise player, or the draft capital to really reinvigorate their franchise. Ultimately the best way to fix these sort of situations is time, patience, and a commitment to youth. Often we see franchises go for the quick fix. It should be very interesting to see whether the Jets look to fill a hole or make a splash. Selecting Mitchell Trubisky might allow the fanbase to temporally talk themselves into a bright future, but in my opinion this would be a massive mistake. The Jets have a train wreck for an offensive line, and putting a raw Trubisky behind a weak line with an awful running game is a recipe for disaster. The Jets are not ready to draft a quarterback, especially after reaching last year for another toolsy raw guy in Christian Hackenburg. Trubisky's pre draft visits are not a good sign for Jets fans who want to see the Jets face reality and rebuild.
The Jets are a couple years away from being a factor again. If they aren't going to take a quarterback, what other positions can we find a stalwart that will help them when the time comes for them to contend? I don't trust the shelf life of running backs in this spot. We don't really have the option to draft a franchise lineman because of how weak this class is at tackle, and unfortunately Brandon killed our ability to trade down.
This leads us to Marston Lattimore. Lattimore is explosive athletically and needs a team to be patient with him as he continues to put together his skills. He plays physical at corner and should excel knocking receivers off their routes. In addition to all these skills he is a very good tackler. If a team allows him the time to develop, he could be a truly special corner. I feel like I keep saying "the Jets have holes" but the Jets have some huge holes in the secondary. They routinely gave up big plays and touchdowns and did not turn the ball over nearly enough. Lattimore can help with a lot of these issues, and he should have time to develop as a corner and hopefully improve his coverage skills to go along with his tantalizing physical package. The Jets just need to pray his hamstring issues are gone for good.
Marshon Lattimore is the best available talent, he fills a massive need, and he has a great chance to be a star for the next contending Jets team.
