Before the 2017 NFL Draft starts, I wanted to get a feel for how Philadelphia Eagles feel about two of the team’s biggest decision makers: Howie Roseman and Joe Douglas.
There’s a lot riding on these two guys as the team prepares for a big draft ahead of them. It’s imperative that the Eagles have a strong draft in order to build around potential young franchise quarterback Carson Wentz.
The Eagles have seemingly had a good offseason to this point. The team addressed the wide receiver position by adding one of the best players in free agency in Alshon Jeffery. Torrey Smith was a low-risk gamble that could pay off if he’s able to recapture his Ravens form. Philadelphia also invested in offensive line depth which is never a bad thing.
Philadelphia lost some defensive starters in free agency. They replaced one of them in Bennie Logan by trading for Timmy Jernigan. Jernigan is only on a one-year deal, but he has the potential to be a really nice pass rusher in Jim Schwartz’s defense.
The Jernigan trade, by the way, seemed to be a nice example of Roseman and Douglas working together to make a good move for the Eagles. Roseman can handle the value aspect of personnel moves while Douglas identifies the talent. Jeffrey Lurie said the two executives have been “unbelievably collaborative” and maybe he wasn’t exaggerating. Douglas’ influence has been apparent in moves that can be traced back to his past connections (Smith and Jernigan in Baltimore, Jeffery in Chicago).
The collaboration between the two men will ultimately be put to the test in the draft, however. The plan is for Douglas to set the draft board while Roseman ultimately has the final say. Hopefully this pairing allows the Eagles to have a strong draft. While there is reason for optimism due to the background Douglas comes from, this duo has a lot to prove. We’ll hold another approval rating some time after this year’s draft in order to see what the feeling is in about a month or so.
