IT’S HAPPENING! The Philadelphia Eagles are signing free agent wide receiver to a one-year contract. ESPN’s Josina Anderson reports Jeffery told her it’s a "done deal" that he’s going to Philadelphia. The team also officially confirmed the news.
Interestingly enough, it’s only a one-year deal worth $14 million, per Ian Rapoport. That kind of annual value is how much Jeffery was expected to get, but no one saw him signing to only a one-year deal.
The short-term contract lessens the risk the Eagles are taking on Jeffery. He has some injury concerns (17 games missed in five years) and he’s only one PED suspension away from missing 10 games (like Lane Johnson in 2016).
Signing Jeffery gives the Eagles a real, actual No. 1 wide receiver! How about that? The 27-year-old Jeffery has put up 304 receptions for 4,549 yards (15.0 yards per reception) and 26 touchdowns since being drafted by the Bears in the second-round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
The 6-4, 230 pound Jeffery figures to be a nice big, physical target for Eagles second-year quarterback Carson Wentz.
With Jeffery and new Eagles signing Torrey Smith in the fold, Philadelphia’s wide receiving corps should be MUCH better than it was in 2016. Wentz actually has some legit weapons to work with now, which is very good news.
