Eagles Free Agency Rumors: Philadelphia interested in Kenny Britt, which makes sense

This makes sense.

NFL free agency begins this week and rumors are flying in fast. According to ESPN’s Tim McManus, the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in wide receiver Kenny Britt. Last week, McManus listed Britt as one of the free agent receivers reportedly interested in playing with Carson Wentz.

Britt makes a good deal of sense for Philadelphia, as I wrote about earlier this offseason. He shares an obvious connection with former Rams and current Eagles wide receiver coach Mike Groh.

Groh coached Britt last year in his first and only season with the Rams. Britt had a career season under Groh, hitting over 1,000 yards (1,002) for the first time in his eight-year NFL tenure. It’ll be interesting to see what Britt’s market will be like. The former first round pick has size and talent. But he turns 29 in September and he had off-the-field issues earlier in his career. Groh’s familiarity with Britt could give the Eagles a good sense if he’s worth the risk. Britt might be affordable to the Eagles given his inconsistent production over the years.

According to some reports, Britt is expected to earn $6-8 million per year. That seems like a pretty decent value compared to players like Alshon Jeffrey ($14-$16 million) and Kenny Stills ($10-$12 million) who are expected to have more expensive price tags.

Britt doesn’t a have a lengthy, proven track record but he is an intriguing talent with good size at 6-3, 223 pounds. Signing Britt would give the Eagles a physical, jump ball receiver for Wentz. If the Eagles can acquire a deep threat (hello, Brandin Cooks), that play-maker could open up room for Britt to operate underneath. The former first-round pick was the most productive player when running crossing routes last year, per Pro Football Focus.

By now we’ve seen the Eagles connected to virtually every free agent receiver, so it’s not to be skeptical of the team’s true intentions. But with that said, McManus is a really good reporter. He has a reputation for being very plugged and he’s suggested Britt could be a possibility for some time now.

Keep an eye on this one as NFL free agency begins this week on Thursday, Mar. 9.
