UPDATE: It appears Williams may not have visited with the Eagles after all. Edholm says he misread a text. Original story below.
The Eagles are set to host wide receiver draft prospect Chad Williams on an official pre-draft visit, according to a report from Yahoo’s Eric Edholm. Williams is one of 30 prospects who will visit the Eagles leading up to the 2017 NFL Draft.
Williams played four years at Division I FCS Grambling State University. In 43 games played, he racked up 210 receptions for 3,062 yards (14.6 average) and 28 touchdowns. He also threw a 32-yard touchdown on his sole passing attempt, so he’d give the Eagles some quarterback depth as well. (Just joking.)
The Senior Bowl committee invited Williams to the college all-star game this year and he reportedly had a good week down there.
Emory Hunt specifically brought up Chad Williams out of Grambling State. Hunt said "He's your quintessential Split End that shows very good route running skills and has an excellent set of hands." The 6-2, 195 pound receiver had over 1300 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns in his senior season.
BGN’s Ben Natan has Willliams ranked as the 20th best receiver from this year’s draft class.
Williams dominated a lower level of competition, which is what you want to see in small school prospects. He is not a great athlete, but he plays the game like his hair is on fire. It is rare to see wide receivers with mean streaks, but Williams' physicality and attitude on the field contribute to how productive he is. He would be a good depth guy with a chance to contribute as he improves his route running.
Williams was arrested on multiple charges last May, including marijuana possession. This arrest could factor into why the Eagles want to bring him in for a visit and get to know him better.
CBS Sports projects Williams to be a sixth or seventh round pick. It’s unlikely he’d be an immediate contributor as much as he’d provide the Eagles with a developmental pass catcher.
