New Eagles guard Chance Warmack is a big, strong guy who can dominate in the run game

The hype surrounding the Eagles’ 2017 free agent signings has mostly been about new wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith (and understandably so), but Philadelphia also had a nice offensive line pickup on the first day of the new league year. The Birds signed Chance Warmack to a one-year contract in order to reunite the former No. 10 overall pick with his old offensive line coach at Alabama: Jeff Stoutland.

The Eagles’ interior offensive line picture is crowded right now so there’s certainly no guarantee Warmack will start, but it’ll be interesting to see if he can push for playing time in Philadelphia.

In order to better get a sense of Warmack’s ability and why Tennessee was OK with letting him leave, here’s a question and answer exchange with Titans writer Jimmy Morris from Music City Miracles.

1 - What was the reaction from Titans fans when Warmack signed with the Eagles? Are fans disappointed the team didn’t keep him? Why or why not?

“Titans fans have known that Warmack was gone since he elected to have season ending surgery during the season. There were a lot of us that thought Warmack was a can't miss guy when the Titans took him. He just never developed into that here. He had some stretches of solid play, but was never dominant and never consistent.”

2 - What are his strengths?

“He's a big, strong guy that can dominate in the run game at times. He was considered a road grader coming out of Alabama. He flashed that ability at times, but again, never consistently. “

3 - What are his weaknesses?

“He just appears to be lost at times. Watching him, it's almost like he can't figure out what to do, so he just doesn't really do anything and gets beat sometimes because of it. And there is probably nothing really to this, but it almost seems like he is too nice to be a good offensive lineman. That's probably ridiculous ...”

4 - I saw Music City Miracles describe Warmack’s play as “disappointing” but noted he wasn’t “a total bust” and was merely “average” instead. Moving forward, do you think he can still be better than what he’s shown or is this a case of “he is what he is” at this point?

“He never had a good offensive line coach while he was with the Titans, so there could still be some potential there that hasn't been unlocked. Look, the guy was regarded by pretty much everyone as "can't miss" coming out. He didn't get bad at football overnight. I really think there is upside still there, but he absolutely needed a change of scenery.”

5 - As a followup to the last question, do you think he can ever be an ideal long-term starter?

“Sure. He was mostly serviceable with the Titans. If the Eagles can find a way to get him to maximize his potential he could be quite good.”

6 - To the best of your knowledge, what’s Warmack like off the field?

“Like I said above, he seems to be a really nice guy. There were never any issues with him in the locker room or anything like that.”
