Chip Kelly is going back to college.

The former Philadelphia Eagles head coach has been hired by the UCLA Bruins, according to multiple reports. ESPN’s College GameDay broadcast said Kelly (a college football analyst for ESPN) confirmed to them he’s taking the job.

Kelly has been out of coaching ever since the San Francisco 49ers fired him after going 2-14 in 2016. Prior to that, he went 26-21 in three seasons with the Eagles.

At the time of his hire, there was belief that Philadelphia could be really successful under Kelly. He was a very intriguing, unconventional coaching candidate thanks to his work with the Oregon Ducks. After early promise, however, Kelly’s tenure started to go downhill.

Moving on from Kelly ended up being the right move for the Eagles. They’re having a lot of success without him right now.

Maybe Kelly will find his own success again in his return to college. Or maybe his struggles will continue as he tries to replace Jim Mora at UCLA.

It’ll be interesting to keep an eye on.
