Eagles release three players, sign five to practice squad

A minor surprise as the Eagles get back down to 53 men.

The Philadelphia Eagles formalized six roster moves this afternoon, claiming three players off waivers and releasing three to make room.

News of the three waiver claims had broken earlier. The release of Taylor Hart is perhaps the biggest surprise, the 2014 5th round pick had a solid preseason but was supposedly being shopped in an effort to trade him, and with undrafted free agent DT Destiny Vaeao making the initial 53 man roster, the team had depth at the position. The release of preseason standout Paul Turner was expected when the Eagles claimed WR speedster Bryce Treggs from the 49ers, which would have given the team 6 WRs. Undrafted free agent CJ Smith was the odd man out in an already crowded secondary that added Terrence Brooks after a solid preseason of his own.

The Eagles also announced five signings to the practice squad:

All five were with the Eagles throughout the preseason and cleared waivers, allowing them to be signed to the practice squad. Teams may carry up to 10 players on the practice squad.

Turner and Smith are likely practice squad candidates if they clear waivers.
