It is quite literally reversing a move they made six days ago, when they released Greene from the practice squad and signed Shepherd to the practice squad.
Shepherd was 6th round pick by the Eagles in 2015, and was ticketed for the team’s starting nickel position last year before he suffered an ACL injury in the preseason.
Fast forward one year later, he can’t maintain a practice squad spot with the team.
Greene, meanwhile, was an undrafted free agent from this past spring’s NFL Draft. He played at San Diego State; when the Eagles signed him for the summer, they paid him the most guaranteed money of any 2016 UDFA.
The team could be bringing Greene in for offensive line depth, with Lane Johnson’s potential suspension looming. It could also just be one of those inexplicable, banal mid-season practice squad moves. Who knows? And, frankly, who really cares?
Here’s the Eagles’ practice squad, as it stands today:
FB Andrew Bonnet, LB Don Cherry, RB Byron Marshall, QB Aaron Murray, C/G Aaron Neary, G Darrell Greene, DT Aziz Shittu, CB C.J. Smith, WR Paul Turner and WR David Watford.
