Lane Johnson suspension: Eagles right tackle reportedly could miss 10 games

Eagles starting right tackle Lane Johnson is facing a 10-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, according to a multiple reports. The news was first reported by Darren DeGaetano. Johnson is reportedly appealing his suspension.

This would be Johnson's second PED suspension since being drafted by the Eagles with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Johnson was suspended for the first four games of the 2014 season. This being his second offense makes it a 10-game suspension.

This is obviously very bad news for the Eagles. It leaves Philadelphia without their starting right tackle for more than half of the 2016 season. It also leaves them without the team without their top backup at left tackle. It's been expected that Johnson will fill in for the 35-year-old Jason Peters. The declining Peters is coming off an injury-riddled 2015 season.

Johnson signed a five-year contract extension with the Eagles earlier this offseason worth $56.25 million. The team has planned for him to be their long-term left tackle once Peters is gone. Now his future could be in jeopardy because a third PED suspension means a two-year ban.

With Johnson out, the Eagles could presumably start career backups Matt Tobin or Dennis Kelly at right tackle. That would obviously be a major downgrade from Johnson.

The Eagles offense already had plenty of concerns going into this season. Losing their right tackle makes things a lot worse for Philadelphia.
