NFL cancels Hall of Fame Game

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

So much for football being back. The NFL has announced the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame game scheduled for tonight has been canceled. The Green Bay Packers and the Indianapolis Colts are leaving Canton, Ohio and headed back home. Bummer.

The reason for the cancellation? The logo in the middle of the field was recently painted and the surface became unsafe to play on. Good going, guys.

This embarrassing situation is reminiscent of the time the Philadelphia Eagles had a preseason game against the Ravens canceled in 2001. The turf at Veteran's Stadium was deemed unplayable after a number of fans had already shown up to the game.

With the Hall of Fame game out of the picture, the first preseason action of the 2016 NFL season is set to take place later this week. The Eagles' game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is one of two preseason games that will take at 7:00 PM ET this Thursday, August 11.

Only a few more days to go.
