Here's an update on the Eagles' injury situation following Philadelphia's second preseason game. The Eagles have three days of practice this week before having off on Thursday. Then there's a walk-through scheduled on Friday morning before the team travels to Indianapolis for their Saturday evening preseason game against the Colts.
Matthews addressed media for the first time since suffering a knee injury during practice on Aug. 5. The starting slot receiver isn't expected to play in the preseason. So will he be ready for Week 1? "For sure," he said.
Wentz wasn't wearing pads or a helmet but he was seen at practice doing some light throwing to offensive coordinator Frank Reich.
"Day to day," said Doug Pederson prior to Saturday's practice. "We are going to test him a bit today, just throwing a little bit. Again, it’s one that I’m not going to rush back. I know that injury can be a little discomforting, but at the same time we want to see where he is at."
The Eagles still hope Wentz can play in the final preseason game.
Pederson confirmed Walker will miss the 2016 season due to an ACL injury. Former Villanova player Don Cherry is the second team middle linebacker for now, but Pederson also indicated the team is looking for veteran depth at the position. Stephen Tulloch, perhaps?
Pederson said Smallwood's absence in the second preseason game was not due to a setback. The rookie running back is expected to be active this Saturday.
"We were on schedule to get him out here last week and practice," he said. "In those situations, as runners, he felt like he was fine to go but he couldn’t hit that fifth gear, so to speak. And that was where the tug was at, so we said listen, we’ll give you some more time to rest."
"He] got through the game, got through yesterday with the day off and [had] treatment again. We are hoping that [with] a few reps today, [we] could kind-of ease him back this week and that he would be a day-to-day situation [and] a day-to-day player for us. And we expect him to maybe give us a few reps next Saturday [against the Colts]."
Johnson missed practice due to back soreness. He's been running with the second team due to his expected 10-game suspension.
The Eagles' starting WILL linebacker returned to practice on Saturday after missing Philadelphia's first two preseason games.
The rookie corner suffered a hamstring injury during the first preseason game and missed the second one. He's back now, though.
Sturgis is going through concussion protocol after getting hit in the head by a punt on Thursday night.
The rookie safety suffered a concussion during the Eagles-Steelers game. Like Sturgis, he'll have to be medically cleared before returning.
Grymes is reportedly expected to miss the rest of the preseason after suffering an AC sprain on Thursday night.
Pederson said Fletcher Cox has been excused from practice for a few days while he attends the funeral of his high school football coach.
